In a globalised food production and distri-
bution system consumers are increasingly detached from the sources of the food they eat. Constant optimization in distribution chains and mass production in conjuction with far reaching economic factors (sub-
sidies, profit maximization) lead to a non-transparent market at the cost of small-
scale sustainable organic producers as well as consumers - not even mentioning the
effects on developing countries. In rich countries this not only manifests in devaluation of food (and all of its consequeces) but also increasingly spawned food scandals around contaminated and spoiled edibles. With my thesis project i wanted to design an offer for consumers to overthink their consumption habits not by exposing the defects in our food system but through the positive sides of regional
production. FairStand is an experiment in bringing back transparency and honesty in food production, distribution and consumption. It is designed as a temporary farm satellite in urban areas, providing fresh raw vegetables and fruits with minimal processing by regional and seasonal producers. The food is made available as a convenience snack for a suggested minimum price but is voluntarily paid for without supervision.
